Rice is the staple grain for more than half the world’s population, especially Asia. It is the second most cultivated crop after maize. There are around 40,000 varieties of rice and are grown in all the continents except Antarctica. It is a major food supplement in many Asian countries and is a vital ingredient in many culinary traditions. Rice is also one of the most environment-friendly crops.
It is low in fat and is a rich source of carbohydrates, calcium, protein and vitamin A. Like maize, rice is also a great source of polyunsaturated fats that remain stable in the food because of its saturated fats. It is also a low source of carbohydrates.
Rice is also a major food source of manganese, iron, copper and zinc.
The oldest evidence of our ancestors eating rice is found in ancient Egypt around 1500 B.C.
In cooking, rice is used in many different ways. In many cultures, rice is either eaten as a side dish along with other complementary dishes or it is eaten as the main dish itself. In certain areas of the world, rice is even a part of many main meals including Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.
The old saying “a poor man’s food” also originated from England. Although its origin is not totally clear, it is thought to have originated around the middle ages. It was around this time that the staple rice diet became a lot more widespread. At that time, rice was one of the most common food in England. Nowadays, rice is available in many different forms, often including enriched rice and dried rice. It is also widely available in the grocery shop at all times.
It is fairly easy to prepare a rice dish and it is also very versatile. In fact, anyone can prepare it for themselves or for the whole family. Even kids can help cut and shape vegetables and fruits for their servings.
